I was pleasantly surprised by the assigned reading, The Hero’s Guide, and how it referenced a book I found on my grandmothers book shelf back in my late teens early 20’s. The Hero with a Thousand faces by Joseph Campbell was a lucky find for me back then. To see it referenced in this course was quite the coincidence. I think it should be made standard reading for this class. Never the less the field guide, though simpler and comparatively quant, was a good read in and of itself.
I also enjoyed the messages in the study material. I learned more than a few good things there.
My wife grew up in the Philippines, and did not always have a place to lay her head. So Elder Hollands talk moved her (she was watching over my shoulder) and that encouraged a good long discussion between us as to how we might be able to one day help people in similar situations.
One of the idea’s we came up with was to buy property in her home country, they have giant houses for sale really cheap there, we’re talking multi-level 8-bedroom 3 bathrooms kind of thing. Buying a large piece of property like that, maybe a few of them, and hiring staff, and then going out to the street where the homeless are and taking them in. giving them a place and food to eat and interviewing them, teaching the staff all the while, interviewing the homeless on what they need/want. Those that are just down on their luck could receive finances to start a business and become independent. Those mentally or addicted to drugs could be sponsored and sent to treatment facilities. It wouldn’t be much but it would be a start. And easy to fund, assuming we had finances invested properly. For now its just a dream, but one that was dreamt up as a result of the weeks study material.
